Throughout my life, God has used the art forms of writing and photography to wake me up to what He’s doing in my life.
To be a good writer or good photographer, you have to slow down. You have to pay attention. You have to open your eyes to what’s right in front of you and choose to be present until a story appears.
This sounds romantic and flow-y, like dipping your hand in a clear, rippling stream to feel the refreshment of it. More often than not, my experience has felt like walking through a storm praying the hail gives way to rain just so I can un-hunch my shoulders long enough to bear witness to what’s happening. Sure, I’ll have a story to tell when it’s over, but I wish I wouldn’t have had to live it in the first place.
That’s not to say it’s been all storms. The sun always returns. And because I’ve sharpened my senses to hunt for God’s hand in the dark, the joy of clasping it in the light is doubled.
