Yet again -- small world, Breanne! The owner of Brown Bear Bakery, Blair, is the sister of Brooke, one of my homeschool-mom friends in middle Tennessee. She talks about her sister’s bake shop with love and pride. I simply loved this line, btw: “They’re checking the clock, ready to bolt like Kentucky Derby stallions...” It’s an image I know well. 🐎😄
Breanne, what a lovely essay!! On Saturday morning, from now on, I will picture your family's trek to the city! I know the kids look forward to that so much!!! Find one near us , and we'll go wherever you get here! Love you ❤️ 😍
1. I’ve always loved when you talk about your beloved coffee shop! I’m always looking for the perfect local coffee shop.
2. Dog of the Day sounds like such a fun game!! I already take a photo and shout whatever kind of dog it is, so might as well make a game of it 😅 since moving to Europe though I will admit to being stumped a lot of the time as to what breed it is (maybe there’s a lot of mutts too?). And I grew up watching dog shows and memorizing encyclopedias of dog breeds so sometimes it’s frustrating.
I truly hope you can try it sometime! And I'm forever googling local pastry shops with 50miles of where we live. Try it! You might find something where you are too! 🥖🥐🧈
I can relate to driving somewhere (not 42 minutes, though, just 10) just for the pastries, but it not only being about the pastries! You painted a beautiful picture of your Saturday ritual - I'll be thinking about it this Saturday as I wait in line for the best pastries in my town ;)
Having a quality bake shop near (or not so near 😉) is one of the most comforting things, in my opinion. There’s nothing like being a “regular” at those places, ya know?
This is a beautiful piece, Breanne. Thank you for opening your life and sharing this weekend ritual with us. I know this will add layers and layers to your experience and memories of your family. If we ever get to visit your bookstore, maybe we stop for pastries too?
Yes! I try to be flexible when people visit and let them choose what they would like to see/do here but this bakery is always on the itinerary (I haven’t had any complaints yet 😉). And yes, making time to write out little memories like this helps them stick in my brain and gives the tools to see our life for the beautiful story it is.

Peggy Ann's Bakery in Greeneville? I hear it's phenomenal!!

A beautiful essay about a lovely, simple yet magical family tradition. I love a good tradition 🥰💛

So beautiful, Breanne. I would love to tag along with you.
I share this bakery with everyone who visits. It's such a hidden gem that surprisingly a lot of locals haven't even heard of! Thanks for reading ❤️
What beautiful memories you are creating for your family. I'm ready to drive to Ohio but downtown OKC will have to do ♥️

Oh we have one that would be worth your drive!

I have to talk myself out of going more than once a week.
Your place looks so lovely.
What a charming little place, I love it. I just perused their Instagram page. Such a delightful addition to the community there 😍
You had me at poetry, then absolutely sealed the deal with pastries. Love your pastry ritual and the joy it brings to you and your fam 💛
Such kind words to send my way, Amanda! Thank you for taking the time to read. May a well laminated pastry find its way to you soon! 🥐

Seeing your name pop up here ✨ And now all I want to do is wander around with you and find bake shops and bookstores.
