Adore LOTR, π§πΌββοΈ I have no interest in threads personally but Iβm all for freedom of choice when it comes to curating our online spaces and have supported clients in their journey there.
For me itβs a nervous system choice rather than a superiority thing. Also I adore Substack and it feels I dunno easier to be here and to engage in the lovely work you all write here. πΊ
Re: Threads, I think the condescension may be a form of defensiveness to establish boundaries if people feel pressured. It's like they don't feel they can just say "no thanks", so they have to make it wrong and justify their decision not to join.
Definitely will need to join in on reading LOTR. I havenβt read them in a long time. Itβll be good to sink back into that comforting story as an adult.
Sounds like a wonderful journey to be embarking on through The Lord of the Rings! Love the family photoshoot too!
Also, what an appropriate quote by Lewis, not just because of the aliens but also with Oppenheimer in theaters and everyone talking about the bomb again.
I love all your thoughts in this post! And definitely want to join the read-through. I haven't read LOTR since I was a teenager so it will be fun to return!
Totally joining the read thru! I tried to read them many years ago, and didnβt finish. Love your phrase, βgentle accountabilityβ π Canβt wait!
The βNever Read Tolkienβ Tolkien fans are my favorite to take through the books. Itβs such a beautiful experience to expand what you know of this fictional world. Iβd be honored to have you join us!
Reading the Silmarillion sounds like a great way to end the summer. I'm toying with the idea of joining the reqd through and making it a slow and steady read. I read the books back when the movies were releasing so it's been a minute.
Also, the UFO talk is surreal. It feels like a clip from Independence Day or Roswell or maybe the History Channels many series on UFOs. That coupled with AI fear... are we living in a sci-fi novel? It's a weird time to be alive.
It certainly is a weird time! I cope by just quietly living my plain olβ life over here π
And yes, the Silmarillion adds so much to reading LOTR! Itβs entirely optional and not necessary but I do recommend it at least once if you can. Iβve also found slow and steady reads to be so comforting during the dark months here in the Northern Hemisphere.
I've never actually read LOTR! I read The Hobbit when I was in grade school and that's where my journey ended, though I'm a huge fan of the movies. Maybe this is the year I finally read those epic tales.
Oooh! I have many first time readers join in every year. It's so fun to watch them experience it. I'd be honored to have you join us. I have a feeling (based on the little I know of you) that you would LOOVE it. π
Me too! It's been SUCH a fun thing for me to put together every year. We're kicking off everything in our house with a Hobbit Day feast on Sept. 22nd. I CAN'T WAIT.
So many things. I still have to narrow down an exact menu! And yes, Iβll be sending out a full post with recipes and links to paid subscribers once I do! π³π§π₯ππ«π§

Hi!

And I might have to put the CS Lewis quote on my wall and read it everyday.

So the birthday party!! Epic -love the pictures
Aliens: I'm more surprised I'm not surprised π³π¬π³
Threads-I thinks it's not for me but agreed the snootiness is too much. I lurk a little but realized stories are at the top of my list of favorites.
I'm trying to figure out if Substack is even for me lol.
The CS Lewis is everything really.

I love this! Iβve got a physical copy of the LOTR books headed my way so I can read along with you for the very first time!
Literally read your comment with a little skip in my heart. Aaah! Iβm so excited for you β€οΈ
Wow, that quote from C.S. Lewis! Thank you for sharing it.
I have never read LOTR so maybe now itβs time! π

I love your idea of a Hobbit feast! What will you be making this time?
