“So, what if, instead of thinking about solving your whole life, you just think about adding additional good things. One at a time. Just let your pile of good things grow.”―Rainbow Rowell
It’s easy at the start of a new year to want to change ALL THE THINGS.
Gut the garage. Start a new workout routine. Finally start meal planning. Get your home on a solid cleaning schedule. Jump feet first into that creative project you’ve been procrastinating on for too long.
At least, that’s the way you feel if you’re anything like me.
Over the years, I’ve realized this method of making a lot of changes (even good ones!) all at the same time is the fastest way to burn myself out and give up on implementing them altogether.
But what if you didn’t do one giant overhaul of your life? What if you made small adjustments where you know you need to—one at a time—and just ‘let your pile of good things grow’?
For me, one good thing I’m adding to my pile is making breakfast the night before. Mornings are hard for me. I don’t sleep well at night and usually wake up exhausted. My kids never sleep past 7am and my dog needs lots of attention as soon as I get up. Everyone is full of energy, hungry and asking me for help in 127 ways before I can even get my bra on.
